Message SellerSome objects ask to be glanced at. This one demands to be studied. Carved from a single piece of dense hardwood and worked across every centimetre of its surface in meticulous geometric relief, this tall elongated wall mask is less a decorative object than an architectural event — a vertical landscape of pattern, symbol, and depth that rewards every minute of attention given to it.
The composition unfolds in distinct registers, read from crown to chin like chapters in a sacred text. At the summit, a bold serpentine or double-S motif — found across Cameroonian Grasslands royal art as a symbol of the python, royalty, and the continuity of dynastic power — dominates the forehead between flanking fields of triangular hatching. Below it, the brow ridge sweeps forward dramatically, sheltering deep-set eyes of quiet, half-closed authority. The cheeks are carved in nested angular planes — a technique that creates shifting shadow as light moves across the surface throughout the day, giving the mask a quality of animation, of breathing.
Descending further, the nose leads to a composed mouth, at the chin of which sits a single inlaid amber bead — a focal point of warmth that anchors the entire composition. The surrounding field of white-tipped triangular teeth motifs encircles it like a crown.
The palette is purely natural: the deep ebony of the stained areas, the warm amber-brown of the carved relief, and the pale cream of the highlighted geometric tips. No pigment. No artifice. Just wood, light, and the hand of a master carver.
A centrepiece for walls that deserve more than decoration.
