Product Description

In the forests of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, the Dan people carve masks that do not merely represent spirits — they become them. This exquisite Deangle mask, one of the most revered forms in the Dan masking tradition, embodies a gentle female spirit believed to act as mediator between the human world and the divine. Where other African masks command through drama and colour, the Deangle speaks through stillness.

Carved from a single piece of dense hardwood and polished to a deep mahogany lustre through years of ritual handling, every element of this mask is intentional. The high domed forehead signals wisdom and calm authority. The long, refined nose descends to a small, composed mouth — the face of a spirit who listens before she speaks. Two delicate cross-shaped scarification marks flank the cheeks, a Dan symbol of identity and belonging. The half-closed eyes, never fully open, gaze inward — the expression of a consciousness dwelling between worlds.

Presented on a clean black steel museum stand, this mask transitions effortlessly from sacred object to sculptural centrepiece — equally at home in a collector's gallery, a contemporary living room, or an executive office. The stand is included.

This is quietude made visible. A spirit you can live with.
